What's so great about SAT?

At Saffron Academy Trust (SAT), the phrase “every child deserves to go to a great school” is far more than a tagline. It is the Trust’s North Star: a core principle, a shared purpose, and a daily driver for every teacher, leader and member of staff across all SAT schools.

SAT has long believed that “great” needed its own definition - one that goes beyond external labels. The dictionary definition for great denotes distinction, excellence, intensity and importance. SAT has embraced that standard, and then raised it. Today, the Trust’s mission is clear: to build great schools by developing great people, and to share that greatness through collaboration, outreach, partnerships and a commitment to collective improvement, far beyond its own family of schools.

Putting People at the Heart of Greatness

SAT’s belief is simple: buildings matter, but people matter more. Culture, community, relationships and professional mastery form the true foundations of a great school. Deputy CEO and Executive Headteacher of RA Butler AcademyEmma Vincent, explains:

SAT is a great Trust to work for because there is the genuine desire for all schools to share best practice and to learn from and to support each other. Consequently, our children get the best possible start in life and our colleagues develop themselves proactively in a low-threat, high-challenge environment.

This people-first approach is evident in SAT's investment in high-quality, evidence-led professional development. Our bi-annual Trust Day, bringing staff across all schools together, has become a hallmark of the SAT experience, creating an energising space for learning, reflection and shared purpose.

The Trust’s Staff Charter further cements this commitment, outlining career pathways, health and wellbeing offers, and a culture of support that allows colleagues to thrive at every stage of their professional journey.

School Improvement the SAT Way: Planned. Purposeful. Progressive.

Greatness doesn’t happen overnight; it is built through consistency, clarity and strategic intent. SAT’s improvement model is grounded in its 3 Ps: Planned, Purposeful, Progressive. This structured approach ensures that initiatives are mapped across time, delivered with focus and depth, and embedded sustainably from the heart of each school. Headteacher of Beckers Green Primary SchoolClaire Smyth, highlights the impact of this collaborative approach:

SAT truly respects the individuality of each school and colleagues across the Trust collaborate highly effectively to share their specialist skills and knowledge, ensuring improved experiences and outcomes for all who attend SAT schools. Effective collaboration allows staff to develop their skills and knowledge and for all schools to continually improve.

Beyond Pedagogy: A Research-Informed, Practice-Driven Culture

Teaching teachers is a complex and dynamic process, and requires a research-informed, practice-driven approach. Our School Improvement Directors have leaned into the work research of Andrea Bean and the Expert Working Party at Teacher Development Trust to ensure we have a clear and coherent didagogy which empowers teachers through coaching, deliberate practice and agile professional learning. This shared commitment to continual refinement is echoed across the Trust. Deputy CEO and Executive Director at Katherine Semar Schools, Julie Puxley, believes that the foundation of a great school is always relational:

Our schools are great because we place care and relationships at the heart of everything we do. When children feel safe and supported, they flourish. I believe that kindness and respect define truly great schools and I see these values lived out every day at Saffron Academy Trust.

Central Services: Expertise That Frees Schools to Flourish

One of SAT’s quiet strengths is the depth of expertise within its central services team. From managing budgets to leading on new school builds, improving infrastructure or integrating complex digital systems, the central team removes operational burdens so leaders can focus fully on teaching and learning. Executive Headteacher at Helena Romanes SchoolCatherine Davis, captures this perfectly:

Saffron Academy Trust is a community of schools in the truest sense of the word. Although each school has its distinct identity, culturally we are all linked by a shared vision, DNA and moral purpose, that every child deserves to go to a great school.
Building great schools starts with building great people and that is what Saffron Academy Trust is all about. We benefit hugely from the enormous expertise and skill of the central services team that takes away the operational strain so we can genuinely focus on the business of school improvement.

Great Schools. Great People. Great Futures.

Across SAT, greatness isn’t claimed, it’s cultivated. It is found in the relationships forged, the culture nurtured, the pedagogy refined and the people empowered. Through collective effort and shared purpose, SAT continues not only to build great schools within its Trust, but to raise the bar for education across the region. Because for every child, in every community, SAT believes one thing above all: Every child deserves to go to a great school, and we’re committed to making that a reality.
